Kandil’s history goes way back to the mid 19th century.

The name Kandil carries a strong history on its own, as a company, opening its doors to the market in 1865, a century where such an industry was still new, manufacturing manual and primitive agricultural machinery which later on were changed to semi-automatic ones, then on to boilers in the early 1900s; and then finally focusing on steel since 1960.

Kandil represented a pillar within the industrialization of the Egyptian market, a genuine regional steel player.

Mr. Mohy Kandil III came back, after attaining his BA degree in Economics from France, affected by the industrial revolution.

He came with a vision of being part of an industrial revolution in Egypt, but was held back by the limitations caused by the political regime at that time. But with a solid dream and dedication, he started trading in flat steel, initiating a small workshop for processing steel sheets while concentrating mainly on prime quality material which gave the family a strong presence and reputation in the Egyptian market.

Taking it a step further, after 2 years from graduation in Mechanical Engineering, Eng. Khalil the elder son took the initiative to start his first service center in the early 1980’s in an old industrial city in Kalyoub with a primitive cutting line and some processing machines.

Amr the younger son, followed few years later and took charge of all the commercial business. With time, the focus began to change from importing to manufacturing; Kandil initiated the first privately owned cold rolling mill in Egypt with a capacity which was then expanded to cover 40% of the local market.

The year 2003 was a huge leap for Kandil, it set up its first galvanizing line with a production capacity of 65’000 Mtons. Based on a very strategic export plan, Kandil built its name as a reliable coated steel supplier, in both European and Middle Eastern markets.

The company’s current production capacity exceeds 350’000 Mtons/year with more than 55% dedicated to export. The company has a sold plan to reach 1’000’000 Mtons/year in 2015, of cold rolled and coated products.

In 2003, arose the need for an ERP system to master the efficacy of the group, therefore Vertika was initiated to provide the industrial ERP (discrete manufacturing) system required. 2005 was yet to witness the entrance into a new business, the glass business where there was a gap in the market and Kandil was able to capitalize on its know how in the heavy industries. In 2007, kandil Marine was launched to serve another market and more is still to come. In Kandil, the sky is the limit.
