The INVEST in EUROPE conference in Shanghai will be hosted under the motto of: Europe & China – 2 continents many possibilities, figuring on the evolution of the Chinese Cross-border M&A and interest in the European market. During the past five years, it could be observed that the M&A process was gradually developing away from its roots of institutional mergers and acquisitions and leading to more privately backed M&A’s. Drivers for this trend were further liberalization of markets, SOE reforms, government support especially for outbound M&A generally increasing direct investment activities of large financial institutions, market-driven industry consolidation, increasing sophistication of Chinese buyers and recovering equity capital markets.
China has a large and growing middle class population with low penetration of managed products at 5 percent of total financial assets on average compared with 15 percent in Western countries. Opportunities exist in several sectors and with increasing investable assets and policies to invest outside China, the nation has become a widely welcomed source of investors especially for investment on the European market. Over the coming years the demand for European products and technologies will continue to grow, by 2020 China will be the largest consumer market in the world. A strong push to become an innovative and environmentally sustainable economy will impel the country to continue to attract and strengthen the transfer of technology or to buy outright foreign technologies.

This presentation and panel will discuss and will go into details of both new opportunities and challenges for Chinese investors in respect of financing M&A investment (especially in the field cross-border investments) in Europe. The panel reviews the determinants and necessities of international banks to finance Chinese investors in Europe. Representatives of banks, investment companies and specialized lawyers will discuss the latest developments concerning the financing of companies and peculiarities of receiving growth capital. A particular focus will be given to the latest developments of the financial markets and regulations in regards of M&A projects in Europe, including the acquisition of know-how and patents.
